Julep, $24.99 per month (US and Canada only)
This little one's ears are the cutest things ever!
Julep is a monthly beauty subscription that contains a mix of nail polish, skincare products, and makeup. Originally, Julep did only nail polish, but they've branched out over the years. Subscribers are able to customize their boxes, so you can get all nail polish, all makeup, all skincare, or any combination of the three. If you don't want to customize your box, Julep will put together a box for you based on your profile. Each month, Julep releases a new collection of nail polish and then either a new product or new range of products. You can choose any three of those or you can choose from a selection of past products if the new collection doesn't appeal to you. You can also add on additional products at a discount. Julep lets you skip a month or have a month of your subscription sent to someone else. Besides the monthly boxes, Julep also has a secret store for subscribers and offers subscribers a discount on all of their products. Normally, I don't like beauty boxes that feature products from only one brand, but Julep's skincare, makeup, and nail polish are of really great quality, so I make an exception for this box.
Here's what came in my July Julep box:
- Julep Blank Canvas Illuminating Treatment Primer (full size, worth $28)
- Julep Nail Color in Hayat (full size, worth $14)
- Julep Nail Color in Sonia (full size, worth $14)
- Julep Nail Stickers (worth ~$5)
My July Julep box was worth about $61. The nail stickers were the free gift Julep sent this month, so I had to estimate the value as I don't see them for sale on Julep's site. This month's theme was Neon Nights and the July collection had a selection of bright neon crème polishes. This month, they also featured So Plush Ultra-Hydrating Lip Gloss in a number of new colors and they offered several new primers -- Blank Canvas Illuminating Primer and Blank Canvas Mattifying Primer. Of course, they also had a selection of older products to choose from if the featured products weren't for you.
I liked the Julep Blank Canvas primer that I tried several months ago, so I wanted to try their new primer. I had a hard time choosing between the Illuminating Treatment Primer and the Mattifying Treatment Primer, but I ended up going with Illuminating. This is a cream primer, not a gel, so I liked that about it. It absorbs extraordinarily quickly and I felt like I had to use a little more of it than I usually do with primers. It had a slight illuminating effect, but it wasn't all that obvious, especially under full-coverage foundation. I really wish I had gotten the mattifying kind as that is what I need the most during the summer. I'm not sure what I was thinking choosing the illuminating. It is called a treatment primer because it contains eighteen plant and fruit extracts to keep your skin healthy and looking radiant. If they offer the mattifying primer in a future box, I will have to snap it up.
The two polishes I selected were Hayat, from the July collection, and Sonia, an older polish. I wasn't a big fan of the July nail polish collection. Neon crèmes aren't really my style, so I gave some thought to skipping the July box. I decided Hayat, which Julep calls a blazing hibiscus crème, was the only one I really liked, so I went with that one. Karina, an inky purple crème, Kemper, a psychodelic violet crème, and Courtney, a capri blue crème, were okay, but not colors I would wear. The formula of Hayat was great -- it went on very smoothly and was long-lasting. I chose Sonia, which was from an older collection of polishes, for my second polish. It's a blue steel matte metallic. I love matte metallics! The color wasn't as metallic as some of the other matte metallics I've gotten from Julep, but it's still pretty. The one issue I had, though, was that I was getting serious chipping the first day I had Sonia on. It wasn't nearly as good as other Julep polishes I've tried, so that was a disappointment.
Julep always sends a free extra in each box. Some months, it's candy, other months it is a sample of a new product or even a full size nail polish. This month, though, it was nail stickers. I always think nail stickers are cute, but I never actually use them. I'm kind of lazy when it comes to my nails and I don't want to add another step to the process.
This wasn't my favorite Julep ever. The nail polish collection this month wasn't for me. Usually I like more than one of the polishes. I would have preferred the mattifying primer to the illuminating, so I don't know why I didn't choose that one. This month's free gift was cute, but not something I see myself using. I'm hoping next month's Julep will be better. I loved June's box so much, and July's is a bit of a letdown.
Did anyone else get the July Julep box? If so, what did you think?
