Birchbox, $10 per month (US only)
Can you believe how fast this little one has grown? It seems like she was just a teeny thing the other day. She's becoming a much better model now!
Birchbox is one of the most popular beauty boxes. At $10 per month, it's also one of the most affordable. Subscribers receive five to six products each month. Birchbox has you fill out a profile when you subscribe, which they supposedly use to choose the products for your box. You usually get more skincare than makeup samples and the sample sizes tend to be on the small side. Each month, Birchbox gives subscribers the option of choosing a product for the following month's box, choosing the curated box, or leaving everything to surprise. They offer three to five different samples to choose from. Sometimes the samples are the same type of product (e.g., different types of mascara or moisturizer), sometimes they are the same product in different colors, and sometimes the products are completely unrelated. If you choose the curated box, you know exactly what you'll be getting, so there are no surprises with that one, but, if you like everything in that box, it's worth it. I find that the curated boxes usually ship earlier in the month and often have high values.
Here's what I got in my June box:
- Davines SU Hair and Body Wash (deluxe sample, worth $7.21; full size costs $24)
- Davroe Ends Repair (deluxe sample, worth $10.37; full size costs $25)
- Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Super-Curling and Lifting Mascara in Black (deluxe sample, worth $8; full size costs $24)
- Murad Oil-Control Mattifier SPF 15 PA++ (deluxe sample, worth $7.77; full size costs $40)
- Mellow Cosmetics Liquid Lip Paint in Tehran (deluxe sample, worth $7; full size costs $14)
My Birchbox was worth $40.35 this month! That's close to double last month's value. I chose the curated box this month. We got two hair products, two makeup products, and a skincare product, so I was quite happy with the product mix.
I generally like Davines products, so that was part of the reason I chose the curated box. Davines SU Hair and Body Wash has a fresh, citrus-y scent that I love. Every Davines product I've tried has smelled amazing. Products that are supposed to be for both hair and body always make me a little nervous, but I liked this one a lot. This is a hydrating shampoo and body wash that you're supposed to use after being exposed to the sun. I used it as a shampoo only, but I liked the results. It was very hydrating.
This is my first time trying a Davroe product. The Ends Repair Leave-in Treatment is supposed to prevent split ends and breakage and strengthen your hair. My hair is really short right now, so this isn't the type of product I need. I tried it and didn't see any difference. I imagine if your hair is longer and has split ends, then this might be a more useful product.
Benefit's Roller Lash is one of my favorite mascaras ever, so that was the main reason I chose the curated box. The brush is supposed to separate and curl the lashes and the mascara sets the curl. It makes my eyes look bigger and gives my lashes lots of volume and length. I've never had a problem with it clumping. You can use this on its own or, for added effect, curl your lashes prior to using it. If you haven't tried this mascara, I highly recommend you do.
The Murad Oil-Control Mattifier was the third product in this box that I really wanted. I've tried a number of Murad products, but it was my first time trying this one. It's a lightweight moisturizer that is supposed to control oil and shine and leave a matte finish, while also giving you some protection from the sun. My T-zone goes into oil production overdrive in the summer, so I couldn't wait to try this. I was really happy with how it worked. It kept my oily chin from looking gross and shiny and made my makeup hold up better. I might have to get the full size version of this.
The final product was the Mellow Matte Liquid Lip Paint in Tehran. This lipstick wasn't for me. The formula was good -- it went on easily, didn't feather, and stayed on for hours. Unfortunately, the color just didn't work. It was just a shade browner than my natural lip color, so it didn't really do anything for me. I prefer a much bolder color.
I'm loving my June Birchbox! I'm happy I chose the curated box. The Davroe Ends Repair and the Mellow lip paint weren't for me, but their formulas were good. I absolutely loved the Benefit Roller Lash Mascara, the Murad Oil-Control Mattifier, and the Davines SU. The mascara and the Murad mattifier tied for my favorite product in the box.
Did anyone else get the curate box? What did you think of your June Birchbox?
