It's time for the wrap-up review of all my April beauty boxes! I'll give you a quick rundown of each subscription box I got in April (regular subscription boxes only -- no limited edition or mystery boxes). At the end, I'll choose my favorite box(es) and product(s) for the month. If you want to read the full review of a particular box, I've linked to each of them below. Links to the box and product websites are in the full reviews, so click on through if you need those. Occasionally, my opinion of a product has changed since I wrote the original review. Whenever that happens, I will note it here.
In my April Birchbox, my favorite product was The Beauty Crop's GRLPWR Liquid Lipstick in Imma Bawse. This had a matte finish, a deep red color that bordered on brick-y, lasted all day, didn't feather, and, best of all, was non-drying because it contains shea and vitamin E. I had said that the Michael Todd Blue Green Algae Antibacterial Toner and the Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Cream were tied for favorite, but, after using them all more, I like the lipstick a hair more. The toner had a strange scent to it, but it helped me kill off a breakout quickly. The Dr. Jart+ cream was a fabulous product that reduces redness and heals the skin. It was perfect to use with the toner. I liked the other two products in this month's box, too. The Level Naturals Shower Bomb in Organic Menthol Lavender had a strong menthol scent to it and would be perfect for when you are sick. The final product was the No. 4 Smoothing Balm. This is a hair balm that made my hair smoother and softer. It's supposed to help with frizz. It's rare I love all the products in my Birchbox, so April was an extraordinary month for the box!
The April Glossybox was better than most Glossyboxes I've gotten in the past year. My favorite product was the ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip in Thursday, a beautiful reddish violet. The staying power was absolutely phenomenal. I can't believe this is a $6 product! It's not quite as good as my favorite liquid lipstick, OCC Lip Tar, but it's close and it's a fraction of the price. All subscribers got two full size ColourPop lippies this month. The second color I got was Airplane Mode, a dirty peach color that was not for me. The Vince Camuto Ciao Eau de Parfum had a beautiful floral, fruity scent. I needed to reapply the perfume halfway through the day, but I loved the scent and can see myself using this pretty often. Vasanti's Brighten Up! is an exfoliating facial cleanser that I often see in beauty boxes. It's definitely on the rough side, so I wouldn't recommend it for someone with very sensitive skin, but it works well for me. It made my skin feel so smooth and look radiant. Gilchrist and Soames' BeeKind body lotion and shower gel had an summery lemon verbena scent. Both products worked well. The lotion was pretty lightweight, but it's going to be perfect for the spring and summer. I loved Doucce's Boombastic Lash Volumizer Mascara that I got a few months ago, so I was looking forward to trying Doucce's Maxlash Volumizer Mascara. Unfortunately, the mascara wand was big and unwieldy and I found it difficult to use. I liked the formula, so I was disappointed that it was hard to apply. Finally, Glossybox included samples of a "Beauty Shampoo" and "Beauty Conditioner." They said it was a familiar brand's new formula and they wanted us to try it without knowing what kind it was. I liked the fruity scent and found the shampoo and conditioner to work well, but they weren't any better or worse than my regular products. Glossybox revealed yesterday that it was Head and Shoulders' new 3-action formula. Unfortunately, all of Head and Shoulders' products have the 3-action formula, so I'm not sure which shampoo and conditioner in particular these are. I'm waiting to hear back from Glossybox about that. Overall, I was pretty happy with the April box. The Doucce mascara was my least favorite product and the ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip in Airplane Mode wasn't the right color for me, but I like everything else in the box.
My April ipsy Glam Bag was pretty good. This month's bag looked like a little ticket, which was cute. I liked four of the five products in the bag. The one product that wasn't for me was the TONYMOLY Lip Tone Lip Care Stick in Rose Blossom. This didn't seem to have a tint at all when it was applied to my lips. I like rose scents, but I don't really want them on my mouth. It was moisturizing, so it did the job, but I prefer other lip balms. The Glamour Dolls Lisa Frank Angled Blush Brush was my favorite product in my ipsy this month. It was average as a blush brush, but the Lisa Frank unicorns and butterflies were just too cute! The Skin & Co. Roma Truffle Therapy Essential Face Toner is now one of my favorite toners. I love everything in the Truffle Therapy line that I've tried, so I was happy to get a product I haven't tried. The toner is non-drying and is supposed to cleanse, purify, and ward off breakouts. The OFRA Cosmetics Pressed Blush in Peach had a beautiful shimmer to it and the color looked amazing on me. I used to not like OFRA very much, but I've tried a couple of products of theirs recently that I have loved, so I'm liking it more. Touch in Sol's No Poreblem! primer had a blurring effect to it and kept my makeup on all day. It is silicone-based, which usually doesn't work well for me, but this formula was creamier than most silicone primers, so I liked it. I wouldn't go out and buy it, but I'll use up my sample.
The DermStore BeautyFix box had yet another full size Juice Beauty product, the GREEN APPLE Age-Defy Moisturizer. BeautyFix has included five full size Juice Beauty products in the past year, and last April, they had the same moisturizer as they did this April. Most people either love or hate Juice Beauty, so I wish that BeautyFix would not include quite so many of their products. I'm not the biggest Juice Beauty fan. I find the occasional product of theirs that I like, but most aren't for me. The weird green apple scent of the moisturizer bothers me, so I won't use it. Honest Beauty's Magic Balm was a miss for me. It's a very lightweight moisturizer that can also be used as a highlighter or lip balm. It's too light a moisturizer for me and I don't find it works well as a highlighter. The only thing I can see myself using it for is a lip balm. The third full size product this month was my favorite, the 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Pomegranate Oil Anti-Aging Lipstick in Poppy. This is a beautiful, bright, neutral red that looked great on me and lasted most of the day. I love that it smelled like pomegranate. We got small samples of a clay mask and a moisturizer from Luzern Laboratories' new line, La Défense Urban Protect. The mask was your average clay mask. The moisturizer had a fruity scent and was very moisturizing. While I liked the VENeffect Anti-Aging Lip Treatment, the cucumber scent was quite strong and it had a sweet taste to it, which it could have done without. At $85, it's one expensive lip treatment! The skyn ICELAND Hydro Cool Firming Face Gels for Smile Lines had a cooling effect. I liked the results I saw, but you'd have to use them more than once to see any real anti-aging effects. Alterna's Caviar CC Cream 10-in-1 Complete Correction Leave-in Hair Perfector is one of my Holy Grail hair products. I've gotten this sample a number of times in subscription boxes, but it's one of the few products I can get again and again and not complain because it leaves my hair so soft and shiny. The final product was the Dermalogica Stress Positive Eye Lift. It's supposed to minimize dark circles and reduce puffiness. It worked pretty well, but I've had better eye creams. Two of the products were misses, but I liked everything else.
The April Play! by Sephora was a little disappointing. In the past, Sephora was good about introducing subscribers to new products, but, in April, they included a lot of old, familiar products that most of their subscribers have already tried. There were only two products I hadn't tried before. One was the Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Eye Pencil in Matte Black. When this is on, it won't budge. The formula is amazing. I just wish they had sent us a color besides black. The other product I hadn't gotten in subscription box before was the Peter Thomas Roth Cloud Cream, which is a very lightweight moisturizer. This would be a great daytime moisturizer in the summer. The Sephora Collection Waterproof Eye Makeup Remover is a good, basic makeup remover that is also supposed to strengthen lashes and hydrate your skin. We also got Kate Somerville's ExfoliKate, which is a fabulous exfoliator. I love how soft and smooth it makes my skin. Marc Jacobs' Daisy is a fruity floral with notes of strawberry, violet leaves, jasmine, and white woods. I like it, but it's not one of my favorite perfumes. The final product was Smashbox's Photo Finish Foundation Primer. I know a lot of people love this primer, but it is sent out all the time in beauty boxes, so it's quite annoying to see this in Play! yet again. I like Smashbox's pore minimizing primer, but I hate this primer. It's a silicone-based primer and it always feels like my makeup is floating over a thick layer of primer when I use it, even if I put just a small amount on. I don't know why Sephora would send out so many products that the majority of their subscribers have tried. We get boxes to discover new products.
My April Julep box was amazing. It's easy for Julep to be consistently amazing, though, because you get to choose your own products. This month, I chose the When Pencil Met Gel Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Ultraviolet, Get in Line Invisible Lip Liner, and Nail Color in Liesl for my regular box products. I love When Pencil Met Gel eyeliners, so I was excited to see the new Ultraviolet color for April. It's a gorgeous, shimmery, blue-based purple. I needed a new invisible lip liner, so I figured I would try Julep's. This liner went on smoothly and did a great job keeping my lip color from feathering. Liesl was in the April nail polish collection and it was the only color in the collection that I liked. Julep calls the color a "cloudless blue crème," and it's the perfect color for spring! I chose three add ons so I could get a free gift. The three add ons were all nail polish -- Adrian, Ebony, and Independent Aries. Adrian is described as a "daffodil crème," and Ebony, a "graphite holographic." Independent Aries is, of course, part of their 2017 Zodiac collection. Julep calls it a "whisper pink sheer iridescent." Ebony ended up being my favorite of the add ons as the glitter is rainbow-y in the sun. Besides my free gift for my add ons, Julep also always sends a little extra for subscribers -- usually a piece of candy or a small product sample. This month, though, Julep sent all subscribers an extra free nail polish as the special gift. The two extras I got were nail polish in Eliza, an "infinite ocean holographic," and Margit, "mushroom with a rose shimmer." Eliza also looked rainbow-y in the sun. I wouldn't normally choose a medium blue, but the holographic shimmer made the polish beautiful. Margit doesn't sound like it would be all that pretty, but the rose shimmer over the mushroom crème base makes it look like a purplish mauve. Margit ended up being my favorite polish in the box.
The April Goodbeing box was just okay. I absolutely loved my Goodbeing boxes when I first started getting them, but I haven't had an amazing box from them in months. Good Medicine's Clarity Awakening Face Cream is a thick moisturizer that has a strong but pleasant scent to it. It was very hydrating and non-greasy, so I quite liked it. Londontown Lakur Enhanced Colour in Chuffed to Bits was one of the products I chose for the April box. The periwinkle creme wasn't a color I would normally choose, but I liked it a lot more than I expected and the polish held up on my hands for a few days without any serious chipping. The other product I chose was the American Provenance Lip Balm in Cardamom. It's a little grittier than I like for my lip balm, but it was hydrating and I liked the sweet, spicy scent. The Noctua-Diem Orange and Neroli Balancing Face Mist has a pretty strong neroli scent to it, but neroli has been growing on me lately. This helped a lot with oil control but didn't dry my skin out. This was a toner I would highly recommend. The final products were Masigi Pulling Oil in Fresh and Boost. Pulling oil is oil you swish around in your mouth from five to thirty minutes and it's supposed to clean your teeth and improve gum health. I just don't like pulling oil. Having that much oil in my mouth for an extended period of time feels weird and I can't tolerate it for more than a couple of minutes. The toner was my favorite product in the box, but I liked the Good Medicine cream, the Londontown polish, and the American Provenance lip balm. While liking four of the five products isn't bad, it just didn't wow me like Goodbeing boxes did in the past.
My Terra Bella Box in April was fun. I tried my first shampoo bar, the Red Bird Natural Soap Sunkissed Shampoo Bar, and loved it. This product smells great and got my hair clean. A little goes a long way with it, so use less than you think you would need. It felt weird to rub what looked like a bar of soap in my hair, but it worked surprisingly well. The oil might make it a little too much for people with greasier hair, but it would work well for those with dry and normal hair. EcoSkin Naturals' Post Shave Gel was very moisturizing and felt great on my legs after shaving. I was worried when I saw how oily it was, but it absorbed quickly, and it soothed my skin. The Abbey Lane Farm Solid Perfume is a mix of bergamot, clary sage, neroli, ylang ylang and cedarwood, and it's the perfect spring scent. You will have to reapply it a few times throughout the day as it doesn't have the best staying power, but I loved the scent, so I didn't mind having to do that. The final product, the Meraki Botanicals Mint Clove Toothpaste, was a little difficult to use as it was on the dry and crumbly side. It tasted mostly like baking soda, but the mint and clove flavors are there. It cleaned my teeth well, but I prefer toothpaste in a tube.
Petit Vour had a good month. The French Girl Organics Cuticle Oil made my nails and cuticles look and feel great. The earthy scent wasn't my favorite, but it was tolerable. I loved the Suntegrity 5-in-1 Natural Moisturizing Face Sunscreen. I got Fair, which worked well for my skin color. It gave me good, even coverage and protected my skin from the sun. Nubian Heritage Patchouli and Buriti Body Lotion smells more like buriti than patchouli, so I was happy about that I quite liked the scent, but it was very strong, so it might be off-putting to some people. It was a good, lightweight body lotion. The fourth and final product was the MarieNatie LoveMarie Lip Gloss in Tickled. Lip gloss just isn't my thing. This is a very sheer color that makes my lips a shade pinker. It's a pretty color, but it's very subtle. It has the stickiness that is so common in lip glosses, so I won't use it. If you like lip gloss, though, you'll like this product.
The April Mommy Mailbox was beautiful. The Graphique de France Copper Marble Flat Thank You Notes were really pretty and of great quality. It's nice to get a pack of thank you cards in a box. The Cultivar Organic Rose and Helichrysum Toner had a floral scent to it, but it didn't smell that much like rose, surprisingly. It is supposed to minimize redness, speed up healing, and reduce scarring. It balanced my skin so it wasn't too oily, but it also didn't dry it out. The Wellsmith Hydrating Lip Balm in Blackberry Flavor was very moisturizing. I loved the blackberry scent, but there wasn't much of a blackberry flavor. The Fred and Far The Future is Bright Pin was cute. It's shaped like a trillion-cut diamond. I'm not the biggest pin wearer, but I will wear it occasionally. The Viter Energy Caffeine Mints in Wintergreen was the only miss in the box for me. They taste good, but energy supplements aren't something I use. Each mint contains the same amount of caffeine as half a cup of coffee, so you can take just one or you can take a few if you need more caffeine. I do like that you can build it up to the level you need. This was one of the better Mommy Mailboxes I've seen.
Last but not least, we have Kloverbox. The April box had an Earth Day theme. Elements of Aliel's No. 2 Peace Cleanser is made with African black soap, glycerine, chamomile, dandelion, and yarrow. It had an earthy scent that I didn't love, but it did a great job of clearing up my skin. It's supposed to remove makeup, fight inflammation, and cleanse your skin. MudLOVE's Be the Change bracelet wasn't my style, but I love that each bracelet gives a person in the Central African Republic a week's worth of water. Be the Change is stamped on clay and then strung onto an elastic band. It's of high quality and it's cute. I gave it to a friend who would appreciate it as it was more her style than mine. She loved it. The AvoSeedo allows you to grow an avocado tree without piercing the pit with toothpicks. It floats in the water like a little boat for your avocado seed. It can take a month or longer for the seed to sprout, so I haven't seen any growth yet, but I keep checking. The final product in the box was my favorite! I love Zabana Essentials Dry Glow Shampoo, so I was excited to try their Dry Shampoo in Lavender Citrus Mint. The scent was beautiful and the powder sopped up excess oil from my hair without leaving that annoying whitish cast that so many dry shampoos leave behind.
Choosing favorites is always difficult, but I think my favorite products in April were the ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip in Thursday from Glossybox, the Zabana Essentials Dry Shampoo in Lavender Citrus Mint from Kloverbox, the Glamour Dolls Lisa Frank Angled Blush Brush from ipsy, the Julep When Pencil Met Gel Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Ultraviolet from Julep, and the 100% Pure Fruit Pigmented Pomegranate Oil Anti-Aging Lipstick in Poppy from DermStore BeautyFix.
It was hard to choose favorite boxes, but I think it was Julep, Birchbox, and Glossybox this month!
What did you think of the April boxes? Did you have any favorite boxes or products?
