DermStore BeautyFix, $24.95 per month (US only)
Emmett was all excited because he thought that we got a DermStore BunnyFix box for Healthy Skin and Hare in the mail. He was very disappointed that it was actually a BeautyFix box. He soon forgot his disappointment, though, because I let him have the box to play in and gave him a blueberry for a treat.
DermStore BeautyFix is one of the most underrated beauty boxes. At $24.95 per month, it is more expensive than many beauty boxes, but its value is always at least $100, usually $140+. When people ask me about a good box for someone over 30, this is the box I recommend. If you want to try out high end skincare without spending tons of money, this is the best way to do it! BeautyFix boxes contain at least six products per month, usually 7-9. The boxes follow a pattern -- there are usually two full size products, at least one moisturizer (sometimes two or three), one makeup item, one hair care product, and a beauty tool. There are exceptions -- last month's box didn't have a makeup item and there was a month without a beauty tool recently -- but that is their general formula for box composition. DermStore also always includes a sample or two of a very expensive ($100+) skincare item. They had been sending out teeny samples of products in that price range, but, this month and last month, they've actually sent deluxe size samples. BeautyFix isn't the box for you if you want to try out lots of different makeup or if you want really exciting and different products from month to month. If you care about skincare in general and fighting signs of aging in particular, BeautyFix is your box.
Here's what BeautyFix subscribers got this month:
- LumaRx Detail Trimmer (worth $19)
- MDSolarSciences Daily Eye Repair Emulsion (deluxe sample, worth $27.89; full size costs $82)
- Supersmile Professional Whitening Toothpaste (teeny sample, worth $1.05; full size costs $21)
- Supesmile Professional Whitening Accelerator Component (teeny sample, worth $3.21; full size costs $55)
- Erno Laszlo Hydraphel Skin Supplement (small sample, worth $13.60; full size costs $55)
- Laura Geller Pout Perfection Waterproof Lip Liner (full size, worth $18)
- Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream (deluxe sample, worth $38.44; full size costs $128)
- Keranique Lift and Repair Treatment (full size, worth $18)
The June DermStore BeautyFix was worth $139.19! You really can't beat this box's value. I love how they have a deluxe size samples of a $128 product and an $82 product. If you want to know how well a skincare product works, especially if it is supposed to be anti-aging, you need to use it for at least a couple of weeks, so getting deluxe samples is important!
The LumaRx Detail Trimmer was the item I was most excited about. I hate plucking my eyebrows and I don't like waxing at all, so I was hoping this would be a good solution to my eyebrow problems. This is battery powered and has a longer blade for less detailed work and a tiny blade for eyebrows. The head on this trimmer pivots and there is even an LED light to help you see what you are cutting. It comes with a plastic attachment that slips over the blades so that you can cut hair shorter without cutting it off completely if you want. The AAA battery needed to power this trimmer is included in the box. This was a lot more powerful than I was expecting! I wasn't as careful as I should have been and I cut a little too much hair off on one eyebrow, so I've had to fill in a small patch with an eyebrow pencil. Despite that issue, it was easy to use and did a great job. I know to move a little more slowly the next time I use it.
The texture of the MDSolarSciences Daily Eye Repair Emulsion is unlike that of most eye creams. Due to the dimethicone in it, it feels closer to Smashbox Photo Finish Primer. It goes on smoothly and doesn't feel like it's sitting on top of your skin like Smashbox primer does, fortunately. This contains caffeine, aloe, and several different plant extracts to kill puffiness and give your skin some extra nutrients. If you have bags under your eyes or general puffiness, any eye treatment containing caffeine is your friend. Even if you don't normally have those issues, eye cream with caffeine is good to have around for when you've been crying and need to go out in public. This emulsion is effective at reducing puffiness, but, at $82, it's definitely on the pricey side.
The sample sizes of the Supersmile toothpaste and whitening accelerator were on the small side, which makes it hard to tell how well these products work. You can use the toothpaste on its own if you want, but to get your teeth whiter faster, you can use the accelerator at the same time as the toothpaste. I've used these a few times now and have found that they make my teeth feel extra clean. My teeth might be half a shade whiter, but it's hard to tell. I'd need to use it for an extended period of time to see a real difference. The toothpaste is mint flavored, but the flavor is very light and better than that of most toothpastes. The accelerator doesn't seem to have a flavor. While I like the Supersmile toothpaste and accelerator, they're more expensive than most dental care products. If they give you the results you want, though, they might be worth it to you.
I was skeptical that the Erno Laszlo Hydraphel Skin Supplement was going to be very moisturizing. This is a toner that is not alcohol-based, though, so it isn't drying like most are. It looks like water in the container, but it has a thicker consistency than you would expect. It feels very silky, similar to a thin lube. Sorry, that's the best way I could think of to describe the consistency. It contains vitamin B5, comfrey root, and glycerin, so it will help even out your skin tone, fight signs o aging, and moisturize your skin all at once. Again, like many of the products in this box, it's not cheap, especially for a toner, but it's also not your average toner. It made my skin feel soft and smooth, which is something I've never had a toner do before. If you're main skin concern is dryness, this would be the perfect toner choice.
Colored lip liners aren't my thing, but the Laura Geller Pout Perfection Waterproof Lip Liner works amazingly well. The formula is creamy and goes on easily, but once it's on, it's on, and it isn't going to budge. It was just a shade browner than my natural lip color. It surprised me how close it was to my lip's natural color because I wouldn't have guessed that at all when I swatched it. I didn't think I would be able to use this color because I almost never wear brown lipstick, but, because it is close to my lips' coloring, I can probably use this with medium neutral colors. Some subscribers received Cabernet or Buff instead of Fawn. I would have preferred Cabernet, but I can make this work. I don't understand why more companies don't make clear lip liners and why they aren't more popular.
The Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream is meant for daytime use and is supposed to firm and moisturize your skin and fight wrinkles. It's very lightweight and has a soft floral fragrance to it. At $128, it's the most expensive product in the box, but DermStore, surprisingly, gave us a deluxe sample. It feels luxurious and I kept wanting to touch my face after I used it. The scent does stay on you for quite some time, so, if scented creams bother you, you'll want to choose a different moisturizer. I'm going to have to ration this carefully because there is no way I'm going to spend $128 on a moisturizer, but I love it and don't want to run out.
The last product was a full size Keranique Lift and Repair Treatment Spray. You're supposed to use this spray to give your hair some volume, fight frizz, and strengthen your hair. As you've probably heard me say before, the last thing I need is a volumizer. To get this spray to give you maximum volume, you're supposed to blow dry your hair after using it. I used it but didn't blow dry my hair. It didn't give me much volume that way, so I was happy about that, and I found that it made my hair a little shinier and softer. I can see myself using this on occasion when my hair needs a little boost in the shininess and softness areas.
I liked every product in the June DermStore BeautyFix. It's rare for me to like all the products in a box! Some of them are on the expensive side, so I don't think I'll ever buy them, but I love using them. The box composition was perfect with three skincare products, a hair care product, a dental care product, a beauty tool, and a makeup item. I always love seeing what's in my BeautyFix box and DermStore almost never disappoints.
