May was a better than average month for beauty boxes! In this post, I'll give you a quick overview of each box I received this month. At the end, I'll choose my favorite box(es) and products(s) for May. If my opinions on any products have changed since I wrote the original review, I'll make a note of that here. In each box summary, I've linked to the full review in case you missed the it when it went up and want to read it. If you want a link for a particular product, click through to the full review.
I chose the curated Birchbox for May. This box was worth $40.33. I mostly chose it because I wanted to try CLEAN's new scent, Blossom. The perfume ended up being my favorite product by far in my May Birchbox. The Benefit Hoola Matte Bronzer was a good quality product, but I don't use bronzers often. I liked the Coola setting mist and am looking forward to using it to keep my makeup looking perfect on even the hottest days. It has sunblock in it, so that is an added bonus. The Davines shampoo and conditioner smelled so good, but they gave my hair some volume that I just didn't need. Finally, there was the Model Co Lip Lacquer, which was not for me at all. The color, a boring nude, was not my style, and, like so many lip glosses, it had that stickiness I hate. This wasn't my favorite Birchbox ever, but I adored the perfume and plan to use my Birchbox points to get the full size version, so I was happy with it.
ipsy has had some great months lately, and May was no exception. For a $10 subscription, the value was incredible! My May ipsy Glam Bag was worth $69.90. I loved all of the products and thought the makeup bag was one of the cutest ever. I used to not like Pacifica all that much and found their products to be very hit or miss, but, lately, they've really stepped it up. I tried some of their coconut eyeshadow years ago and wasn't impressed by the pigment, so I wasn't happy to see I would get more of it. The pigment of this eyeshadow was amazing, so Pacifica must have improved the formula. While I find makeup brushes to be a little on the boring side, I always need them. The INSPR Eye Fluff Brush was soft and picked up a lot of powder without leaving a lot of fall out below my eyes, so I was impressed by it. Smashbox's new X-Rated mascara gave me lots of length and didn't clump. This is one of my favorite mascaras now. While I liked the Clark's Botanicals Smoothing Marine Cream, it is overpriced at $115 for a full size! Last but not least, ipsy sent me three sheet masks from Soo Ae and counted them as just one item. The masks fit well and hydrated our skin. They're pretty average as far as sheet masks go. I almost never love every product in my ipsy bag, so May was quite the treat for me. If I had to choose a favorite product from my May ipsy, it would be the Smashbox mascara. For a few months last year, I considered canceling ipsy, but I'm glad I stuck it out because my bags have really improved!
The May Glossybox was the best Glossybox I've gotten in some time. It certainly wasn't the best ever, but it was a good, solid month. My box was worth $58.32. The Nioxin shampoo and conditioner were not for me at all. They dried out my hair. I won't be using them again. I still haven't tried the VersaSpa face tanner because I don't really want to tan right now. I loved the other products in the box, fortunately. The Rituals shower foam smelled so good, as did the Talika Photo-Hydra Day moisturizer. Both products were very moisturizing. I've gotten Benefit's Roller Lash Mascara a number of times in subscription boxes, but I love the subtle curl it gives my eyelashes, so I'm always happy to get more. It would be hard to choose a favorite product from my Glossybox this month, as I loved the Rituals shower foam, the Talika moisturizer, and the Benefit mascara equally.
I hadn't expected to get the May Allure Beauty Box because Allure had oversold the box. When I asked them if I would get it, they told me no, so I requested that they cancel my subscription. I was surprised to get this box in the mail and learn that they had not canceled my subscription. I really wanted the May box, so I was okay with that. This box was worth an amazing $110.69! I didn't like the Pixi by Petra Mattelustre Lipstick because the color wasn't for me and the formula was drying and not long-lasting. The Make Up For Ever mascara gave me more volume than length, which is the opposite of what I need, but the formula was good, long-lasting, and didn't clump. I loved all of the other products. I subscribed because I wanted to try the Foreo Luna Play, which also came with two samples of their cleanser, one of day and one for night. The Luna Play made my face feel really soft and has helped make my skin look better than it has in some time. I wish the full size wasn't so expensive! The Equitance serum, while very expensive, is effective and helped speed up the lightening process of those horrible little spots pimples leave behind. I was happy to find a Cōtz product that I like. It has a tint to it, but it is much sheerer than their other tinted facial sunblock, so I was able to use it. The formula is lightweight and can go under your makeup. Lauren B nail polish is fast drying and goes on smoothly, so I am always happy to get another one. The color, Santa Barbara Surf, wasn't the best color of my skin tone, but it was pretty. While I liked just about everything in this box, the Foreo Luna Play was definitely my favorite.
The value of the May DermStore BeautyFix was $155.58. The boxes have such high values this month! While BeautyFix is always heavy on skincare, they seem to always have at least one makeup product, so I was surprised that there was no makeup this month. There were six skincare products plus a beauty tool. Because BeautyFix is focused on high end skincare, their boxes can seem a little on the boring side at times. Their products are fabulous, though, so I certainly can't complain. If you are in your 30s or above, this is a great way to check out lots of different skincare products to see what works for you without breaking the bank. The beauty tool was the beautyblender Mini, which I've gotten before in another box. I like how it applies my foundation, but, admittedly, I never really use them. I'll use them on special occasions when I need flawless coverage, but it's not something I'll ever use every day. Both the Avène and LaRoche-Posay facial sunblocks gave lightweight, full coverage, but the LaRoche-Posay is slightly cheaper per ounce. There were two serums -- Replenix Pure Hydration Hyaluronic Acid Serum and the extremely expensive SkinMedica HA5. I liked them both, but they're a little out of my price range. I didn't mention it in my full review of the box, but the HA5 had a strange, almost burnt, scent to it. The scent bothered me, but it went away quickly, so it didn't stop me from using it. The glō·therapeutics Vital Eye Cream helped brighten my under eye area a bit. The Doctor Babor cream was moisturizing and is supposed to have anti-aging properties, but, at $154, it is very expensive. If I had to choose a favorite, it would be the glō·therapeutics eye cream.
I finally got off the waitlist for Play! by Sephora! The sample sizes were smaller than I expected. It is a $10 box and it was worth $38.39, so the value is there. I liked all the products in the box. My favorite product was the Bite Beauty lipstick in Kimchi. The formula is creamy and long-lasting and I loved the fun pink color. There were three masks in the box. Korres' sleeping mask had a beautiful rose scent and left my skin feeling hydrated when I woke up in the morning. There were two Origins masks plus a small spray called Maskimizer that is supposed to prime the skin to make the masks more effective. I don't know how well the Maskimizer works because it is hard to determine whether it improved the efficacy of the masks. I liked both the Origins charcoal mask and sleeping mask. I've gotten Brigeo's hair mask in boxes a number of times. It makes my hair so soft and shiny when I use it, so I'm always happy to get a new one. The tarte Tarteist lip liner was okay, but I prefer clear liner. Finally, Sephora includes a bonus fragrance sample each month. This month's was Atelier's Orange Sanguine. I've tried this perfume before and, while I like it, it's not my favorite scent ever.
Petit Vour had a fabulous month! The May box was worth $33.83. My favorite product was the Ecco Bella Flower Color Good for You Gloss in Power. Normally, I hate lip gloss, but this didn't have that horrible stickiness to it and it had great pigment. It felt closer to a liquid lipstick than a gloss. The color was gorgeous and perfect for me. I also loved the Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel Blemish Clearing. It helped clear up my skin and wasn't harsh at all. Emily used the Captain Blankenship sea salt spray. She thought it was a little too strongly scented, but she the hold and texture it gave her were perfect and the scent faded pretty quickly. I've gotten Smart Ash a number of times in beauty boxes. It can be a little messy, but it gently whitens teeth, so it's worth it.
The May Terra Bella Box was worth $71.49! The Klēn Shower Steamer might have been my favorite product. It's so hard to choose a favorite in this month's Terra Bella! The shower steamer lasted a few showers and gave off a relaxing scent that made my showers even more enjoyable than they usually are. Of course, the Orglamix eyeliner and eyeliner brush were also great. I loved how easy the brush made applying the eyeliner! The Meraki toner was fabulous and very refreshing. Best of all, it fights acne. The Purelygreat deodorant wasn't for me because I just do not like applying deodorant with my hands, but Emily loved it. Lavender is her favorite scent and she is always looking for a good natural deodorant, so this was perfect for her. She said it was very effective and didn't stain her clothing. The Woolin and Co. bar soap was moisturizing and had a light, clean scent to it. I'm normally not the biggest fan of bar soap, but I liked this and will use it. May was an impressive month for Terra Bella!
LaRitzy Box was okay this month. It had a value of $64. I was happy with the value and liked the products, but nothing really wowed me and felt really special. My favorite products were the GlamHer Booth powder brush and the Jacq's Organics Carrot Seed Face Toner. The brush was fluffy and applied my blush perfectly, but brushes are always kind of boring for me. It's almost like getting socks for Christmas. You need them, it's good to have them, but they're not all that fun or exciting. I liked how the Jacq's Organics toner felt on my face. It made my skin feel tight in a good way and it was refreshing. Unfortunately, the long-lasting earthy scent wasn't my favorite, but I'm willing to overlook it because it's a great product. The Bellápierre top and base coat was okay, but I prefer my Lauren B Dual Base/Top Coat to this product. Finally, there was the Manna Kadar Liplocked Priming Gloss Stain. The formula of this was great, but the color didn't work for me at all. It wasn't even a half shade off from my natural lip color, so it didn't look like I was wearing anything on my lips. LaRitzy had amazing boxes a few months ago, so I hope that June is a better month. I know they have it in them because I've seen them do it before!
The theme for the May Beauteque Mask Maven was Hydration Station. This month's bag of masks was worth about $22.63. Most of the masks were moisturizing, as you might have guessed. My favorite mask this month was the My Beauty Diary Red Wine Mask. It smelled like very sweet grape juice and is supposed to fight signs of aging, and both brighten and gently exfoliate your skin. Emily's favorite mask was the Aritaum Hyaluronic Acid Mask. It fit her face well and gave her tons of moisture without making too much of a mess. Click through to read about the rest of the masks in the May Mask Maven.
I absolutely loved the May Beauteque BB Bag! The May bag was worth about $65.90. It's hard to choose a favorite product. The Prelab toner, The Saem Fresh Bamboo moisturizer, The Saem cleaning tissue, and the Milky Dress SOS Blemish Cream were all tied for my favorite product from the BB Bag this month. I loved that they gave me something to remove my makeup with, a toner, a moisturizer, and a blemish treatment. It's almost an entire skincare regimen! I was impressed with the A'Pieu nail polish. I wasn't expecting much from it, but it gave me great coverage with just one coat. The Kinepin nail kit was okay, but not something I really wanted or needed. I'll probably give that away to a friend.
Kloverbox hasn't made it to me yet, unfortunately, but the review will be up once I get it!
Choosing a favorite box and favorite product this month feels almost impossible! My favorite boxes were Allure, Petit Vour, Terra Bella, Beauteque BB Bag, and ipsy. Those are a lot of favorites, but I can't narrow it down any further! As for favorite products, I have three. I think the CLEAN Blossom perfume from Birchbox, the Ecco Bella lip gloss from Petit Vour, and the Foreo Luna Play from Allure were my favorites. May is the best month I've seen in a while from beauty boxes! I'm excited to see what we'll get in June. Summer boxes are often the most fun, in my experience.
Did you have a favorite beauty box this month? Any favorite products? I'd love to hear what you thought of the May boxes in the comments!
