Glossybox, $21 per month US, has many international versions
Here are two completely adorable two-week-old Mini Satin bunnies. They like that there is plenty of room in the Glossybox for both of them. It won't be like that for long, though! These little ones grow fast!
Glossybox is a monthly beauty subscription that tends to have bigger, higher end samples than many of the other mainstream subscription boxes. Of course, because of that, it also has a higher price tag. Most of the items subscribers get are the same, but there is often a little bit of box variation. Glossybox has a number of international versions, but they are usually very different from the boxes subscribers in the US get.
Here's what I got this month:
- Not Your Mother's Haircare Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray (travel size, worth $2.99; full size costs $7)
- Studio 10 Brow Lift Perfecting Liner (full size, worth $22(?))
- Biossance The Nourisher Precious Rose Face Oil (small sample, worth $9.60; full size costs $72)
- Unani Dermo Defense Mask (full size, worth $18.17)
- Leighton Denny Expert Nails Nail Polish in Pillow Talk (full size, worth $15.82)
Figuring out the prices was a little difficult this month. Three of the products (Studio 10 brow liner, Unani mask, and Leighton Denny polish) did not seem to be available on US-based sites. For the Unani, I converted the price in Euros to US Dollars. For the polish, I converted the price from British Pounds to US Dollars. I was going to convert the price of the Studio 10 liner from Pounds to Dollars, but, for some reason, despite the listed price being £20 on the Studio 10 website, Glossybox listed the value as being $22 US. If I converted the price on the Studio 10 site to US Dollars, the value of the pencil would be approximately $32 US. I went with Glossybox's value because they must have some reason for putting a considerably lower price on the information card. Perhaps it is available for that price on a website that I did not come across. Anyway, the approximate value of my April Glossybox is $68.58.
First up, there was the Not Your Mother's Beach Babe Texturizing Sea Salt Spray. I was a little disappointed to get this because it is a $3 trial size that you can buy at Walmart. Some subscribers got Norell perfume in place of this sample. I would have much preferred the deluxe size sample of the perfume. I don't use sea salt spray, but my lovely girlfriend, Emily, does. It gave her hair some nice texture and it had a nice, coconut-y scent. This spray contains vitamins to help strengthen your hair. While this wasn't for me, I always love discovering good quality drugstore brands. If a cheaper product works as well as an expensive product, I want to know because I don't want to spend more money than I have to!
All of the profits from the Studio 10 Brow Lift Perfecting Liner go to Look Good Feel Better, a charity for women undergoing cancer treatment. They teach women techniques to cover up some of the changes to their physical appearance caused by cancer and cancer treatments. While it might seem silly to worry about beauty while battling cancer, looking good can go a long way toward making the women undergoing treatment feel more normal and lift their spirits.
As you can see above, the pencil is double-sided. One side is a medium brown and is meant to fill in your brows. The other side is much lighter and is meant to highlight the area underneath the brow. You can see the colors swatched below. The brown side was great at filling in my brows and looked very natural. Unfortunately, the highlighter side wasn't quite the right color for me, so I won't be able to use that side. I'll definitely use the darker side, so the pencil will get some use. While this color will probably work for a number of people because it is a medium brown, I doubt it will work for those with blonde or black eyebrows. Including a colored brow product can be risky because Glossybox doesn't seem to customize boxes based on the surveys they have subscribers fill out. This pencil will not work for everyone. I wish Glossybox would be a little better about customization. I don't understand the point of the surveys they have subscribers fill out if they're not going to use them to put together the perfect box for each customer.
Glossybox sent out the Biossance The Revitalizer moisturizing fluid in September and I loved it. I was happy to see Biossance's The Nourisher Precious Rose Face Oil in my April Glossybox. The rose scent is surprisingly light, so, if you hate rose, you might still like this. The oil itself isn't greasy or heavy and absorbs very quickly into the skin. This oil is supposed to fight signs of aging, keep moisture in, and brighten your skin. It contains squalane and vitamin C, which are both amazing for your skin. While much of the squalane in products on the market is from sharks, this is a plant-derived squalane, so it's safe for the vegetarians and vegans out there to use. I love this product, but I wish it wasn't so expensive!
I was impressed that Glossybox included a full size tube of Unani Dermo Defense Face Mask! This mask is supposed to lock in moisture and protect your skin. It contains aloe, so this will be the perfect mask for summer. The mask is a clear gel and is lightly scented. My face felt hydrated after using this. You rinse it off after ten minutes, so this is a good choice for when you need some serious moisture but don't have much time.
Finally, there was the Leighton Denny Expert Nails Nail Polish in Pillow Talk. It is a magenta-y wine color. I loved the color and found the formula to go on smoothly. It took an average amount of time to dry, so, as you probably know, that's a problem for me! I keep hearing about how amazing the Seche Vite topcoat is, so I decided to finally buy it and try it with this nail polish. It made the nail polish dry so fast! I can't believe I didn't buy Seche Vite before now. I could do whatever I wanted after just a couple of minutes without worry of ruining my pretty nails. I almost never wear nail polish because, whenever I try to, I end up messing it up because I'm too impatient to wait for it to fully dry. I almost always remove it soon after I put it on because it looks so bad. I won't have to do that anymore! The Leighton Denny nail polish lasted for a couple days without chipping, which is really good for me. I'm hard on my nails, so if a nail polish makes it through even one day intact, it's a good polish.
I feel as though it has been a while since Glossybox had an amazing month. The April box was okay, but it didn't feel all that special. Glossybox used to wow me every month, but the past few months just haven't done it for me. I hope May will be a better month. I liked all the products except for the sea salt spray, which Emily liked, but it just felt like something was missing. It's hard to explain because all of the products were good. I think it was a boring combination of products. What did you think? Is it just me? I have really high standards for Glossybox because they have put out some amazing boxes, so a box that is good, but not great, is disappointing for me. I'd love to hear what you thought of your Glossybox this month!
