Birchbox, $10 per month, US only
Poor little Eleanor is heartbroken that there are no bunny treats in this month's Birchbox. I had to run to the store to get her some dandelion greens because she was so upset.
Here's what came in my Birchbox this month:
- Wilma Schumann Hydrating Collagen Eye Pads (one pack, worth $3.60; 5-pack costs $18)
- Smashbox Photo Op Eyeshadow Trio in Filter (deluxe sample, worth $12.44; full size costs $28)
- PARLOR by Jeff Chastain Smoothing Blowout Spray (small sample, worth $4.90; full size costs $24)
- Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream (teeny sample, worth $4.04; full size costs $27.50)
- Milk Makeup Lip Color in C.R.E.A.M. (teeny sample, worth $3.08; full size costs $22)
This month's Birchbox was worth $28.06. I chose the curated box, Ready for Anything. At first, I wasn't going to go with the curated box, but I like Smashbox eyeshadow and I like eye treatments, so I figured I might as well go for this option. I kind of regret that choice.
First, there were the Wilma Schumann Hydrating Collagen Eye Pads. I generally don't get enough sleep, so the skin under my eyes can often use a pick-me-up. You stick these pads under your eyes for about twenty minutes. It hydrates the delicate skin and helps with puffiness and wrinkles. I saw some improvement, so I imagine that if I used these several times, I would see significant improvement. There are five sets of pads if you buy the box, so you could probably get your eye area into shape by using them a couple of days in a row, then maintaining it by using the pads weekly. If you are in serious need of a good eye treatment, at $3.60 per application, this is a relatively affordable option.
The packaging on this is pretty cute! Instead of opening up like a clamshell, the plastic disk holding the eyeshadows swings out from the outer plastic case. It's hinged, so it won't fall out and shatter the eyeshadow. By the way, if you ever do shatter your eyeshadow or blush, mixing the powder with a little rubbing alcohol and molding it to fit its pan will do the trick. Anyway, I am a fan of Smashbox eyeshadow. They generally have good pigment and stay on all day. The only drawback is that they tend to have some fallout, but I just keep a makeup remover cloth nearby and clean up after I apply my eyeshadow. I swatched the colors below. The light color was very subtle on me, as you can see, but the other two colors showed up. The three colors worked well together and lasted until it was time for bed. These aren't my favorite colors and I have a lot of similar eyeshadows, but this will be a good mini travel palette.
You might recall that I fell in love with the Parlor Detangling Leave-In Conditioner last month. Because of that, I was happy to see another Parlor product in my Birchbox. I don't blow dry my hair, so I wasn't sure what, if anything, this product could do for me, but I figured it was worth a try. Unfortunately, it just made my hair look a little puffy and weird. Has anyone who actually blow dries their hair tried this? How does it work for you?
I've heard good things about Kiehl's and wanted to give their facial cream a try. I was disappointed in the sample size of this. It is teeny and I don't think I'll be able to get a good idea of how well this works with such a small sample. It's supposed to give your face some serious hydration. I can't say I noticed anything special about this. It is an okay basic facial cream, but I've used much better (e.g., One Love Organics Skin Savior). I would pass on this.
Finally, there was the Milk Makeup Lip Color in C.R.E.A.M. It's swatched below. The color just wasn't for me. This was a couple of shades lighter than my natural lip color and looked strange on me. I like bold colors on my lips, so pale neutrals aren't my thing at all. The formula was okay, but wasn't as long lasting as I would have liked.
The March curated Birchbox was okay, but I wish I had just left my box up to chance instead of selecting this one. I liked the Wilma Schumann eye pads and the Smashbox shadow palette. The rest of the stuff, though, I could have done without. I was not going to get this, but then I got the sample choice e-mail and picked this impulsively. I'll be sure not to do that again! What did you get in your Birchboxes? Anything good? What did you think? Did anyone else get the curated box? I hope you liked it more than I did!
