Julep, $24.95 per month (US and Canada only)
My baby bun was having fun in all the squiggles!
As I mentioned last month, I decided to replace my Allure Beauty Box subscription with Julep! Julep makes their own nail polish, makeup, and skincare products. Subscribers to their monthly box can get all makeup, all nail polish, or a combination of the two. Julep will put together a box for you based on your profile, but you're able to go online and switch out the products Julep chose for you for other products from the 20th to 24th of the month if you prefer to make your own selections. You can also add products to your box at a discounted price. Julep puts out a collection of nail polish and makeup each month, so there are always new things to choose from. Normally, I don't like subscription boxes that include products from only one brand, but I've found that I love Julep's nail polish and makeup, so I've been wanting to try this subscription.
I subscribed past the cutoff date to get the November box, so I won't start my reviews of the monthly Julep boxes until December. You have to subscribe by the 18th to get the following month's box. Julep always has free gifts with new subscriptions, though, and they send the free gift out as soon as you subscribe instead of waiting until your subscription actually starts, so I'll be reviewing the free gift box I got from Julep. I used the code COLOR8 to get this box, but I'm not sure if that code still works. Julep has an even better free gift right now, a 12-piece nail polish set, that you can get with the code FREEFALL if you start a new subscription.
Here's what I got:
- Julep Glow Highlighting Powder in Champagne (full size, worth $28)
- Julep When Pencil Met Gel Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Sunset Gold Shimmer (full size, worth $16)
- Julep Light on Your Lips Full-Coverage Crème Lipstick in Girl Code (full size, worth $22)
- Julep Lip Gloss in Charming (full size, worth $20)
- Julep Nail Color in Rayma (full size, worth $14)
- Julep Nail Color in Drew (full size, worth $14)
- Julep Nail Color in Wilma (full size, worth $14)
- Julep bag (worth $5(?))
My box was worth $133! Not bad for a free gift! While Julep is best known for their nail polish, they make amazing makeup, so I was excited to get a mix. I don't really know why they bothered throwing the bag in. I would have preferred they throw in another nail polish or makeup product instead of the bag. Most beauty box subscribers have way too many makeup bags as it is.
I didn't realize until I was editing the pictures that you get a nice shot of my boob in the highlighter's mirror. Oops!
I can be picky about my highlighters. I don't use them all that often, but, when I do use one, I want something pretty with a little bit of shimmer, while also looking natural. Julep's Glow Highlighting Powder in Champagne ended up being just about perfect for me. It was easy to apply and gave me a little extra something without being obvious. The shade is on the warm side, so it may not work all that well for people with cooler skin tones, but it looks great on me.
Julep's When Pencil Met Gel eyeliners are some of my favorite eyeliners, so I was excited to get a deep gold color. When I use this color, Sunset Gold Shimmer, though, it isn't really dark enough to give me a lining effect. It looks darker above than it does when I'm wearing it. You can't tell I'm wearing eyeliner when I use this. It's too subtle. The formula is amazing and long-lasting and most of their other colors are gorgeous, but this color just doesn't work for me.
I've had good luck with Julep's Light on Your Lips Full-Coverage Crème Lipstick, so I was looking forward trying a new one. Girl Code is a deep, punch-y pink. The color looks pretty in the tube, but I had to really build it up to get the color you see in the swatch. It was hard to build up on my lips and it wasn't as creamy as I would have liked. It was on the dry side, so it made it difficult to get enough color on my lips. I was pretty disappointed in this product. I've liked other Julep lipsticks in the past, so I don't know if they've changed the formula, if I got a defective lipstick, or if this color is just a little drier and harder to work with than the other colors I've tried.
I hate lip gloss in general, so I knew that this product wasn't for me. The stickiness of lip gloss drives me crazy. That said, Julep's lip gloss isn't as sticky as other lip glosses I've tried. This had good pigment and the pinky mauve color of Charming was very pretty and romantic. The color was a little too close to my natural lip color to do much for my lips.
My favorite part of the box was the nail polish! I have so much nail polish already, but I always love getting new colors. I got some fake nails at the dollar store and painted them so you could see how the colors looked when on nails. Rayma is described by Julep as an Italian plum crème and I'd have to say that is a pretty good description. It's a beautiful, deep warm purple. Crème finishes are my least favorite nail polish finish, but I don't hate it. Julep calls Drew a "fabulous fuchsia crème." It's a pretty color, but I have a number of similar color nail polishes already. It's a little on the boring side. My favorite of the three was Wilma, which Julep describes as a "Mojave sunrise gold chrome." This is a soft rose gold color and it is gorgeous. If you're not familiar with Julep's nail polish, they advertise it as being breathable, so it's better for your nails than conventional polish. It's 5-free and vegan, plus is contains Hexanal and green coffee extract to help strengthen your nails. I'm hard on my nails and usually chip my polish just about immediately, even with a good topcoat, but Julep polish will last me a few days without chipping, so it's some of my favorite polish.
I'm pretty happy with my free gift, but not as happy as I would have been with the 12 polish gift that came out two days after I ordered my subscription. Fortunately, I have an amazing girlfriend who started a subscription just to get me the 12 polish gift. I'll review the 12 polish set soon! The highlighter and nail polish in the box were my favorite products, but, sadly, the lipstick, lip gloss, and eyeliner weren't for me. Watch for my reviews of the monthly Julep subscription boxes beginning in December!
Does anyone else have a Julep subscription? What are your favorite Julep products so I'll know what to look for when I'm selecting products for my boxes?
