January is over! Here's a quick recap and review of all the monthly beauty boxes I got! Which were my favorites? Am I considering canceling any? All of the boxes I reviewed this month are pictured above. I'll be doing summaries of each one individually below. Only monthly subscription boxes will be included, not special edition one-time boxes that I've reviewed. Unfortunately, the January Kloverbox didn't make it in time to be included in this wrap-up, but I will add it in once I have it.
As the month wears on and I have the chance to use a particular product for a longer period of time, sometimes my opinion of a product I reviewed changes. If that happens with a product, I'll let you know here!
If you see a box you want to know more about than what I put in this recap, I've included links to the full reviews.
Allure had a great month! I'm still in love with the Trust Fund Beauty Nail Polish Champagne Problems! It's such a pretty color, goes on smoothly, dries quickly and actually lasts a couple of days before chipping on me. As hard as I am on my nails, a couple of days is very good for my nail polish. It would probably last a lot longer on most people. I also can't recommend the DHC Deep Cleansing Oil highly enough. Makeup just melts off with this. Best of all, when I was writing up this recap, I noticed the cleansing oil is on sale until the end of March! I also loved the Erno Laszlo Transphuse Eye Refiner. It's a great eye cream, although definitely on the expensive side. The Mally Evercolor Starlight Waterproof Liner in Black Navy was okay, but didn't smudge as much as I would have liked, giving this deep color a severe look. The Skinn Cosmetics Caviar Lip Cream in Ruby was nice, but not all that special. I don't like deodorant in a pot, so the Schmidt's was not for me, but Emily loved it. Finally, there was the Derma E Hydrating Night Creme. I was not a fan. It had a very strong plumeria scent to it which I didn't like. I'm not a Derma E fan in general. This box ended up being worth $77.13, which I think is a great value for a $15 box.
Next up, we have Glossybox! This was a so-so month for Glossybox. All subscribers got the MeMeMe Lip Glide in Playful Peach. The formula was great and I was impressed by how long it stayed on my lips. The color wasn't for me, but I would love to try this lip glide in other colors. Everyone also got the Emite Base Primer in Diamond Heart. This was a light, sheer primer that kept my makeup looking great all day. I enjoyed using the -417 Foot Cream. It has helped the dry skin on my feet quite a bit. My favorite product in the January Glossybox was the Beautiful Nutrition Lemon Rinse. It made my hair feel so soft! You need this stuff. The last product in this box was the Royal Apothic Cream Creme. Mine came in Venetian Grove, but the scents subscribers received varied. Venetian Grove was an absolutely horrible scent. I washed it off as soon as I tried it for the first time. It had very strong odor and smelled of my grandmother's perfume. I hated this stuff. I can't even speak to the efficacy of the lotion because I couldn't tolerate having it on me for long enough to tell. Everyone I talked to had the same complaint. The January Glossybox was worth about $65.40.
Birchbox had a pretty good month! I was so happy to get the Paula's Choice Resist Intensive Wrinkle-Repair Retinol Serum. I've heard so many great things about Paula's Choice! I am still loving the serum and like that Birchbox actually gave me a good size sample of this. The Derma E Hydrating Scrub is the first Derma E product I've ever liked. The exfoliating grit is a little rough, but it isn't irritating. It uses walnut shells, not microbeads, so no worries there. I'm liking the Eyeko Fat Liquid Eyeliner. It's easy to control, gives me great lines (both thick and thin), and can last all day. The Cartier La Panthere perfume just wasn't for me. I did not like the smell at all, so I just used it the once and have no plans to ever use it again. The Number 4 Prep and Protect worked okay as a detangler, but wasn't anything special. I liked three of the five items, which isn't bad for Birchbox. This month's box was worth $40.05, a much higher value than what I've come to expect from Birchbox.
Ipsy also had a better than average month! I loved four of the five items. There was a theme this month -- All Eyes on You -- so four out of the five products were for the eyes. The one item I didn't like all that much was Mitchell and Peach English Leaf Body Cream. I always hate seeing Mitchell and Peach in a beauty box. It just seems really cheap and I've never liked a product from them. I got the Balm's Mr. Write (Now) in Scott B. Bordeaux. I am loving this deep maroon eyeliner. It goes on smoothly and lasts all day. I also thought that the Peek Beauty Espresso Natural Stain Brow Powder was fabulous. This was my first time trying a Peek Beauty product. It filled in my eyebrows perfectly and looked very natural. The Pur~lisse 4-in-1 Eye Adore Serum was a nice addition to my skincare regimen. It's helped me hide the fact that I haven't been getting enough sleep! Finally, there was the City Color Eyeshadow Trio in Falling Leaves. I wasn't expecting to like this as I have never found a City Color product I liked. This was a beautiful reddish/orangish eyeshadow palette that made my green eyes pop. It went really well with the Bordeaux eyeliner! It stayed on all day and looked amazing, so I was very impressed. The January ipsy was worth $73.96.
Next up, we had The 3B Box. You might remember that I wasn't all that impressed with last month's 3B and gave some thought to canceling it. Fortunately, in January, they redeemed themselves. This was an all skincare box from them, which I always love to see in Korean beauty boxes. I was ecstatic to see COSRX Advanced Snail 96 Power Essence. I'm all about snail mucus products! They really help any blemishes you have heal up faster and any dark spots left behind by a pimple disappear. Trust me, you need snail mucus in your life. There was also a full size 3W Clinic Collagen Whitening Essence. I thought it was strange that they included two essences in one box, but I love essence, so I'm okay with that. This is a brightener for your skin. I've been using this essence at night and the snail essence in the morning. The Botanic Farm Grain Ferment Cleansing Sherbet was a really nice makeup remover and cleanser. The grain in it, rice bran, will also brighten your skin. I loved the Petitfee Dry Essence Foot Pack, a mask for your feet that softens and smooths the rough skin down there. I definitely recommend it! Finally, there was the Missha Speedy Solution Clearing Gel Eye Patch. These are little masks that go under each eye to firm and brighten the skin. The effects weren't as long lasting as I would have hoped, but, all in all, I liked it and would use it again given the chance. This 3B Box was worth about $36.49. For a $12 box, that's not bad at all. I'm very impressed by 3B this month and hope that February is just as good.
Beauteque Mask Maven is always fun. I love doing sheet masks, so getting a great selection of 9-11 different masks from Korea each month is a treat. Seven of the nine masks this month were moisturizing masks. I wish there had been a little more variety. Since there were so many masks and we didn't have a chance to try them all, I will just say that the Mogongtox Soda Bubble Mask Sheet was my favorite! It bubbles up into a foam and gives your pores a deep cleaning. I highly recommend this mask. Best of all, it costs only $2.50. This month's Mask Maven was worth about $19.65. It's never the highest value, but you get to try a variety of masks you would never encounter on your own, so that makes it more than worth it to me.
The January BB Bag came in a solid silvery bag, which was one of my favorite bags I've gotten from them. The A'Pieu Color Longwear Shadow Stick was better quality than I expected. It went on easily and had good pigment. It didn't quite last all day, but close to it. There was a cheap pair of tweezers as their monthly beauty tool. They would be good for traveling or as an extra pair in your purse. There were two Ladykin Affinitic Snail Creams, a pink one (moisturizing) and a blue one (whitening and moisturizing). I preferred the pink shell because the texture was a cream and the blue one was more of a gel. They both worked well and were completely adorable! They had another adorable product, the Tony Moly Pocket Bunny Sleek and Moist Mist. You're supposed to spritz your face with it throughout the day for a little extra moisture. This isn't the type of product I like to use. I don't like spraying my face with something when I have makeup on because I'm afraid of making my makeup smudgy. It can always be used on my neck and chest, though. I loved the Nature Republic By Flower Lip Scrub. I love a good lip scrub because my lips can get so dry. It has some grit to it, but it isn't too harsh, and I ended up with some very soft lips when I was done. Last but not least was the Scinic All Day Fine Pore Toner. This toner is meant to minimize your sebum. My skin is beyond dry now, so I'm not sure how well this really works, but I'm excited to give it a try in the summer when my skin is oilier. The January Beauteque BB Bag was worth about $62.49. Overall, I was happy with the BB Bag this month. The snail cream and the lip scrub were my favorites, but the eyeshadow and toner were also nice. I loved the little bunny container, too!
The DermStore BeautyFix box is quickly becoming one of my favorite boxes. I love that they have a nice, high quality beauty tool each month! The January box had this cute Danielle Creeations Chrome Mini Mirror with 4x magnification on one side and no magnification on the other side. It was the perfect height for my baby bunnies to use to get ready for their photo shoots! I was a big fan of the June Jacobs Papaya Purifying Enzyme Masque! It gives your pores a deep cleaning and has anti-aging properties. I also loved the Arcona Magic White Ice moisturizer. It has a nice cranberry scent and gives your face some serious moisture. My favorite product in this box was the Peter Thomas Roth Acne Clear Invisible Dots. You put a little dot sticker on a pimple before bed and the pimple is smaller or even gone in the morning. I found it far superior to the cheaper ones out there because it molded to my skin and had strong adhesive, so it didn't fall off over night. The Karuna Age-Defying Hand Mask gave my hands some much needed moisture for a day, but they were back to being dry the next day. It was worth it to have my hands not feel like sandpaper for a day. The Tarina Tarantino Pearl Glow Luminizing Primer gave my skin a subtle, beautiful glow and kept my makeup looking fabulous all day. The Medicell Labs Hydrating Calming Facial Mist was something I don't use all that much, but I'm going to try to remember to use it on my chest and neck area to help prevent signs of aging there. Finally, there was the Revita LT Hair Stimulating Shampoo. I wasn't able to try this because my hair is too thick as it is, so I don't want a shampoo to stimulate hair growth. It is formulated for blonde hair, but a representative from the company assured me it was safe for all hair colors. The January BeautyFix was worth an amazing $116.49! I loved it this month. The shampoo wasn't for me, but I'm happy with everything else, so no complaints here.
Petit Vour had a great month in January (be sure to click on the link to see some absolutely adorable bunny pics if you haven't seen them already). I loved the kaia Bamboo Tapioca Beads. It's a cleanser that you mix with water to cleanse and exfoliate your face and also gives you a little oil control. My skin looked amazing after I used it. The Evelyn Iona Natural and Organic Gel Eyeliner and Brush really impressed me. I got a perfect tightline with this. The brush comes to a point and is slightly stiff so you can get a great line with this. The eyeliner is a true black and will stay on all day. The pot it comes in is small, but you use very little each time, so I expect it will last a while. The S.W. Basics Cream gave me some serious moisture. It smelled very much like olive oil, which others found off-putting. I didn't love the smell, but I didn't find it offensive. I also loved French Girl Organics Rose Lip Polish! It is a rose-scented sugar scrub that smells so good and got my lips silky smooth. The January Petit Vour was worth $42.42. What a fabulous box this month!
I was happy with the January LaRitzy for the most part. The Otavea Lemon Scrub was my favorite item in my LaRitzy this month. It's a sugar body scrub with a beautiful lemon scent. It smelled yummy, exfoliated perfectly, and gave me a little added moisture with the oils in it. The Zoe Organics Cream is a shea-based body cream. It's great if you need serious moisture, but I wouldn't use it otherwise. Shea always takes forever to be fully absorbed, so it's not my favorite choice for a body cream, but, sometimes, it's what you need. I'm not a lip gloss fan, so I didn't love the GlamNatural Lip Cream in Prom Dress. I adore the gorgeous rose color and the shimeriness, but it didn't have all that much staying power. Finally, there was the Mai Couture Highlighter Papier in St. Barts. Someone at LaRitzy made a mistake and accidentally gave me two books of the highlighter instead of the one book that was supposed to be in the box. Unfortunately, this was way too dark for me to use as a highlighter, but it works as a blush for me. This is great for when you are traveling or on the go. The LaRitzy this month was worth $72 ($100 if I count the extra packet of highlighter in my box). The scrub was the only thing I loved in the January LaRitzy box.
Finally, there was the Terra Bella Box. The Meraki Botanicals Rosemary Sage Hair Oil can be used as a treatment or a serum. I used it as a serum and found that it gave my hair a nice sheen. The annoying thing about it, though, is that the oil is congealed at room temperature, so you have to dip the bottle in a hot water bath to get it to melt each time you want to use it. There were fig + yarrow Smelling Salts in the January box. I thought that was an unusual inclusion for a beauty box, but I liked it. The eucalyptus and rosemary essential oils are supposed to give you a little energy. The SkinYoga Coffee Scrub was your basic coffee scrub. It was both exfoliating and moisturizing, so I liked it. Coffee scrubs are always fun. There were two products from Mother Earth Beauty, an Eyeshadow Primer and a sample size of the All Natural Mineral Eyeshadow Powder in Midnight Mocha. I liked the primer at first, but I've noticed that it doesn't hold up quite as well as other eyeshadow primers I've tried. The eyeshadow didn't have all that much pigment, but it could be used on your brow bone. Finally, there was the Wellsmith Herbal Bath Tea in Detox. I loved the bath tea. It was very relaxing and smelled great. The January Terra Bella was worth $52. It was a good month for Terra Bella.
Picking winners is always so difficult! I was very impressed with Allure, Petit Vour, DermStore BeautyFix, and 3B this month. I thought January was a good month overall for beauty boxes, so I wasn't unhappy with any of the boxes. What did you think of the January boxes? Did you have any favorites?
