This is my second month getting DermStore BeautyFix. I really enjoyed the November box, so I was excited to see what I would get this month. I was not disappointed! This box costs $24.95 for a month-to-month subscription, but if you would like to get a one-time box, it costs $34.95. Right now, they are having a promotion to get your first month half-off! I highly recommend taking advantage of this sale. While $24.95 might seem a little on the expensive side for a box, they promise that the boxes will be worth over $100 each month.
So, here's what was in the December box:
- Harry Josh Pro Tools Mini Oval Brush (one brush, worth $25)
- bliss foot patrol cream (full size, worth $18)
- Lalicious Weightless Sugar Coconut Hand Cream (teeny sample, worth $1.38; full size costs $18)
- vbeauté Lip Spread Anti-Age Hydrating Lip Gloss in Kinky (full size, worth $19)
- Glominerals Suede Matte Stick in Pinup (full size, worth $16)
- Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Face Gels for Smile Lines (one pack, worth $4.38; eight-pack costs $35)
- Dermalogica Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer SPF 30 (deluxe sample, worth $15.38; full size costs $49)
- Vichy LiftActiv Serum 10 (teeny sample, worth $4.50; full size costs $45)
- Toppik Hair Fattener Advanced Thickening Serum (deluxe sample, worth $5.28; full size costs $17.95)
The December BeautyFix was worth $108.92. That's more than four times what I paid for it, so I'm happy with the value. There were nine products and a good mix of beauty categories, so there's something for everyone in this box.
I have a very hard time finding brushes I like. I need a brush with thin, stiff bristles tightly packed and no plastic balls on the ends of the bristles. I prefer boar's hair. With my really thick, straight hair, it's the only thing that gets through the tangles and doesn't hurt my sensitive scalp. I was surprised to find that there was a brush I could use in this box! This brush works really well on my hair and, best of all, it's travel size! I had only full size brushes, so this will be very useful next time I'm going away for a few days.
Bliss Foot Patrol exfoliates and softens your feet. It smells like peppermint and eucalyptus. Foot Patrol uses salicylic acid and alpha hydroxy acid for exfoliation, aloe for softening the skin, and peppermint to make your foot feel better overall. I've only had a chance to use it once so far, but I noticed my feet felt smoother and softer after use. They recommend applying it, putting socks on, and then going to bed when you need some serious moisture and exfoliation.
The Lalicioius Weightless Hand Cream sample was very small. I like to give hand cream more than a couple tries to see the true effects of it, so it is hard to say how well this works with such a teeny amount of product. Subscribers could get Sugar Coconut, Sugar Kiss, or Sugar Reef. I was happy to get Sugar Coconut. I loved the light, summery coconut scent when it came out of the tube, but the coconut smell was very faint after it was rubbed into my skin.
This was my first time getting a vbeauté product. The Lip Spread Anti-Age Hydrating Lip Gloss came in two limited edition colors for this box: Distraction (which appears to be a burgundy or deep plum) and Kinky (a hot pink). I received the shade Kinky. I couldn't find these colors for sale anywhere online, so the colors must have been made only for the Beautyfix box. Above, I linked to the Lip Spread in a different color that I found for sale online. It contains papaya and cocoa butter to moisturize your lips. The formula is supposed to cover up creases and wrinkles on your lips. It was a little sticky going on, but the stickiness went away within fifteen minutes. I found it to be quite opaque and have a lot of pigment for a gloss, which I thought was a nice feature. If you have deep lines that need to be covered, I can't promise it will do that, but it would probably be good to hide a bit of chapping in the winter. Like all glosses, it didn't have the longest wear time, but it stayed on until I had a meal.
The Glominerals Suede Matte Stick in Pinup wasn't my favorite. The matte formula showed every flaw on my lips. The red was very orange-based. One of my favorite lip colors to wear, OCC's Manhunter, is an orange-based red, but I hated this shade. It just wasn't flattering on me. I can imagine this being a beautiful color on someone with a deep complexion, but it was not the color for me.
I love Skyn Iceland, so I'm always up for trying one of their products. Their Hydro Cool Firming Face Gels for Smile Lines is a set of two gels -- one for the left side of the mouth and one for the right side, so both are used at once. The gels are meant to plump up the skin around your mouth and relax the muscles in order to hide fine lines and wrinkles for up to twenty-four hours. Besides giving you a temporary wrinkle fix, it also helps to prevent wrinkles by moisturizing, toning, and helping collagen production. I'm fortunate enough to not have any real lines around my mouth yet, so I can't give you a definitive answer on how well it conceals wrinkles. It had a very cooling, refreshing feel to it and the skin around my mouth felt and looked great after I used these.
I like to remind readers all the time that it is a lot easier to prevent wrinkles than it is to get rid of them, so use these gels before you think you need them. I can't say that enough! I always have people telling me that they are annoyed they keep getting anti-aging stuff in their beauty boxes because they are "too young" for it. You're never too young for it! You are never, ever too young to keep your skin in tip-top shape. The healthier your skin is, the longer you can go without signs of visible aging. Also, the skin around your mouth is what wrinkles first on smokers, so if you are a smoker (which I hope you aren't), go out and buy these Skyn Iceland smile line patches now because you're going to need them.
The Dermalogica Age Smart SkinPerfect Primer has multiple benefits, which is always nice when you are short on time or you're traveling and have limited space to pack. Not only is it a makeup primer, it also contains sunblock and has anti-aging effects! I was a little worried when I opened up the bottle and noticed the primer had a tint to it that was quite a bit darker than my skin color. Once I smoothed it on, though, I saw that it was very sheer, so it blended in flawlessly. I applied my makeup after using this primer and was happy with how it looked at the end of the day, so it has great priming capabilities. This is a little pricey, but it's a good product and worth the money if you can afford it.
I love serums and feel like I usually don't get enough in my beauty subscriptions, so I was happy to see this Vichy serum. Unfortunately, this serum sample was on the small side. A little usually goes a long way with serums, so I was able to make this Vichy sample last about a week. Vichy's Liftactiv line of products contain rhamnose, a sugar that they say has serious anti-aging properties. I hadn't heard of rhamnose before and Vichy didn't have much information about it on their website, so I decided to look it up and see what it is and whether it is truly effective. I found that there are two studies showing increased collagen production, so there might be something to these rhamnose claims, but it sounds like it's a little premature to call it a wonder ingredient. I liked this serum, but I didn't see any anti-aging effects in the week I used it.
Finally, there was the Toppik Hair Fattener. I wish there were a way to make it so I was never sent another volumizer or thickener for my hair! The last thing I need is for my hair to seem fuller. It is already so, so thick. I gave this a try because I really do attempt to sample everything I get so I can give thorough reviews. I was happy that there were no noticeable effects with this product. I've heard people with thin hair rave about it, so maybe it works, but I didn't see any added thickness in my hair.
I'm really enjoying my Beautyfix subscription! This is only my second month of it, but they've hit it out of the park both months. They have a good mix of hair care, skincare, and makeup products, and I've made some good discoveries because of this box. I wish that both of this month's makeup items hadn't been lip products, but that isn't a huge deal. The value is great and most of the sample sizes are generous, although a couple were quite small. Overall, I'm very happy with this month's box and plan on trying at least a couple more months of this subscription. I'm looking forward to their January box already!
