Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar, $16 apiece
As many of you know, I absolutely love OCC Lip Tar. It's my favorite lipstick ever. I've been sad ever since they switched from a tube with a brush to a tube with a doe foot applicator, but I still love it. My dear friend, Emma, was nice enough to buy me the entire Fall 2016 OCC Lip Tar Collection, Alchemically Altered. Hautelook had a sale on OCC products and had the entire set of six for $48, so it was an amazing deal. That sale has expired, but Hautelook is currently having another sale on OCC products, so check it out if you're interested! It says the event ends in four days, so act quickly.
I've swatched each color on my arm above; below I've taken pictures of myself wearing each of the six colors. I apologize that the lighting isn't consistent from picture to picture. I really wish I had gotten the same lighting every time, but I took the pictures whenever I happened to wear the lip tar, so the lighting depended on the weather and the time of day.
If you're not familiar with lip tar, it will feather if you're not careful, so I highly recommend a clear lipliner. You could use a colored lipliner if you want, but a clear lipliner can be used for any color lip tar and your lips will never look overlined. I hate overlining, for the record. My eyesight is horrible and even I notice overlined lips a mile away. As I mentioned above, about a year ago, OCC went from packaging lip tar in a soft plastic tube and including a little lip brush in the box to packaging it in a hard plastic tube with a doe foot applcator. While I know the brush made it harder to touch up lips on the run and was a little intimidating to people who weren't familiar with lip brushes, I think the change was a mistake. Given that it is a liquid lipstick, it can be very difficult to get a perfect line with the big doe foot applicator, but it's very easy to get the line you want with a brush. With the new packaging, I put some lip tar in the middle of my lips with the doe foot applicator then spread it out and get it looking perfect with a lip brush. I highly recommend that method.
My favorite color was Fleshworld, a beautiful brick red. OCC describes this as a plum-toned rust. This has become one of my go-to lip colors. It's very versatile. If you can buy only one of the six, let it be Fleshworld!
Next up was Luxe, which OCC says is a deep red-violet with magenta pearl. This is a beautiful color, but it is quite dramatic, so I haven't had too many chances to use it yet. It'll be great for a night on the town when I have a chance to dress up.
Dash is a muted rose-toned beige, according to OCC, and that's a pretty good description of it. It's definitely the most boring of the colors, but it's good when I need something more conservative or when I have some serious eye makeup on and want my lip color to be a little more subtle. I love a bold, bright lip color, though, so this won't get all that much use.
Lush is a deep red-violet, and is the non-metallic version of Luxe. This is a very deep color, so it's not for everyday wear, but it's beautiful and I'll use it occasionally. It reminds me of a purplier version of OCC's Black Dahlia. I prefer metallic to matte, so I like Luxe a little more than Lush.
Now we're getting to the weirder colors! OCC is known for having unconventional colors and the Fall 2016 collection has two. OCC calls Alchemy a true champagne shimmer. This isn't something I would wear on its own, but OCC has always been about mixing lip tars to get the perfect color you want, so I could see mixing this with a matte color that I wanted to lighten up a bit and make a little more metallic. I haven't tried doing that yet, but I will at some point.
The final color was the weirdest. Blackboard is a "dark, dusty blackened green," OCC says, and that's a good description of it. OCC wanted this color to match dark green chalkboards. This isn't a color you could really mix with anything, so I'm not sure what to do with it. I wore it on Halloween just because I figured it would be my only chance to wear it without looking weird. I looked surprisingly good in it, I thought, so I posted a picture of me wearing it on Halloween below.
I loved the Alchemically Altered collection. Luxe, Lush, Fleshworld, and Dash are all very beautiful, wearable colors. Alchemy and Blackboard are a little more out there, but they're a lot of fun. Did anyone else get this collection? Which color(s) worked best for you? Any ideas on what to do with Alchemy and Blackboard?
